Playground surfaces made of asphalt, concrete or packed soil are dangerous and can be directly related to many playground injuries. Gravel, sand and shredded bark offer more protection but they produce problems of their own requiring constant maintenance, sanitation risks and a greater danger for eye injuries or accidental ingestion during play.
